Lightning Add Speed and Two-Way Reliability, Signing Ilya Mikheyev to Four-Year Deal
The Tampa Bay Lightning have added another experienced forward to their lineup, signing Ilya Mikheyev to a four-year contract worth $15.4 million, carrying an average annual value of $3.85 million. The move gives Tampa Bay another proven penalty killer and versatile winger as the organization looks to remain a Stanley Cup contender.
Mikheyev, 31, arrives after spending the past two seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks, where he quietly re-established himself as one of the NHL's most dependable defensive forwards. During the 2025-26 season, the Russian winger recorded 18 goals and 18 assists for 36 points in 77 games while averaging more than 17 minutes of ice time per night. His strong two-way play even earned him votes in Selke Trophy balloting.
The signing marks another chapter in a journey that began in Russia before Mikheyev broke into the NHL with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2019. After three seasons in Toronto—including a career-best 21-goal campaign in 2021-22—he signed with the Vancouver Canucks. An ACL injury slowed his first season in Vancouver, but he rebounded before being traded to the Blackhawks in 2024 as part of a cap-clearing deal that also included Sam Lafferty and draft picks.
Chicago proved to be a perfect landing spot. Mikheyev rediscovered his offensive touch while becoming one of the league's premier penalty killers and a trusted veteran presence for a rebuilding Blackhawks squad. Rather than returning to Chicago in free agency, he now heads to Tampa Bay, where his speed, relentless forechecking, and defensive awareness fit perfectly into Jon Cooper's system.
For the Lightning, Mikheyev fills an important role. While he may not be a top-line scorer, he brings versatility that allows him to move throughout the lineup. He's capable of killing penalties, matching up against opposing top lines, and contributing secondary offense when given the opportunity. His combination of skating ability and responsible defensive play has made him one of the NHL's most effective complementary forwards.
Over seven NHL seasons, Mikheyev has compiled 98 goals and 103 assists for 201 points in 427 career games, suiting up for the Maple Leafs, Canucks, and Blackhawks before joining Tampa Bay.
With another experienced, defensively responsible forward now in the fold, the Lightning continue to reshape their roster for another run at the Stanley Cup. Mikheyev may not be the flashiest addition of free agency, but his consistency, work ethic, and ability to impact every area of the game could make him one of Tampa Bay's most valuable under-the-radar signings this summer.
